Legend of the Drak Challenge, Andy Birkett, is Back and Keen For Big Water

Andy Birkett, the defending champion and seven-time winner of the N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon in partnership with FNB, is eagerly anticipating his return to the uMzimkhulu River. The Southern Drakensberg paddling mecca holds a special place in his heart, and after a prolonged absence, Birkett is ready to renew his relationship with this iconic race.

Speaking on his way to Underberg for a week of training on the uMzimkhulu River, Birkett reflected on the absence felt by many paddlers since the race was last held nearly two years ago. The 2021 edition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown, making this year’s return even more significant.

“I can’t wait to get back onto the river,” Birkett said with palpable excitement. “Everyone is super excited for the Drak. Coming two and a half weeks before the MyLife Dusi, it is perfect for a hard race as part of the Dusi planning as well.”

Birkett emphasized the importance of mastering the unique rhythm required to navigate the technical uMzimkhulu River efficiently. The river’s pool-drop rapids demand not just speed but a smooth, consistent approach.

“That rhythm is so important, and I think not having paddled the river for so long, it is something everyone will notice,” he explained. “It is not just about finding the fastest line through a rapid. Sometimes you can choose a slower line that links better and allows you to keep up your boat speed by staying in the flowing water.”

He further elaborated on the nuanced technique, saying, “It is hard to explain, but it is definitely something you pick up and learn with time on the river. You can waste a lot of energy by not paying attention to the river and always looking and planning fifty metres ahead.”

Holding the record for the most victories in the race’s history, Birkett is particularly excited about the possibility of a full river this year. The past six or seven years have seen medium to medium-low water levels, but with the abundant rainfall this summer, conditions could be ideal.

“That would be exciting, and paddlers who have tripped at a full level will be at an advantage. I am hoping to get a full day or two while I am in Underberg now,” added the Team Euro Steel star.

Beyond the enjoyment of paddling, Birkett highlighted the benefits of training on the uMzimkhulu for sharpening river skills. “It is the perfect river skills sharpener before the Dusi,” he noted. His week of training in Underberg will be crucial preparation before he meets up with his young Dusi partner, Dave Evans, in Pietermaritzburg.

“Gee, it is six weeks to the Dusi, and we haven’t sat in a boat together!” he quipped, acknowledging the urgency and excitement as the countdown to the Dusi Canoe Marathon begins.

As paddlers like Birkett gear up for the N3TC Drak Challenge, the anticipation is building for what promises to be an exhilarating return to one of the most beloved races in the canoeing community.
