The Absa Cape Epic 2022 lived up to its reputation as one of the world’s toughest mountain bike stage races, drawing top riders and fans from around the globe. Held from March 20-27, the event covered 681 kilometers with over 16,900 meters of climbing, pushing competitors to their limits across the rugged terrain of South Africa’s Western Cape. Known for its gruelling routes, the 2022 edition didn’t disappoint, offering riders a mix of technical trails, steep climbs, and rocky descents. Adding to the challenge were the extreme weather conditions, with intense heat during some stages making the race even more demanding.

In the Men’s category, the dynamic duo of Nino Schurter and Lars Forster from team Scott-SRAM dominated, claiming the top spot. Schurter, a world champion, secured his second Epic win, cementing his place as one of the sport’s greats. Despite the tough competition and terrain, the pair showed exceptional teamwork and endurance to cross the finish line in first place. The Women’s category saw an equally impressive performance by Sofia Gomez Villafane and Haley Batten of team NinetyOne-Songo-Specialized. The American pair rode with incredible consistency throughout the stages, eventually taking home the win after a hard-fought battle.

As with any Cape Epic, there were moments of drama. Several teams faced mechanical issues and crashes, which added to the unpredictability of the race. However, both the men’s and women’s winning teams managed to avoid major setbacks and stayed focused on their goals. Local hero Matt Beers, riding for Toyota-NinetyOne-Specialized alongside American Christopher Blevins, put up a strong fight but ultimately finished second in the Men’s category. Beers, the defending champion, delivered a solid performance, adding to the excitement of the competition.

The final stage, a time trial in Val de Vie, was particularly intense as teams fought for podium spots in a last push for glory. The event concluded with spectacular stage finishes and close battles, giving fans plenty of action to cheer for. Overall, this race once again proved why it is called the “Tour de France of mountain biking”—offering epic challenges, dramatic moments, and an unforgettable showcase of endurance and skill.
