Joining a running club will transform your approach to fitness and provide motivation, support, and a sense of community. Whether a trail- or road runner, it can be the next step in your running journey.

There are countless formal ‘clubs’ and unofficial social running groups across the country. It’s important to make an informed decision.

We spoke to Renée Jordaan, former race director of the Comrades Marathon and Sanlam Cape Town Marathon among other big events. As a runner herself, Renée knows all about the ‘community’ of running and what it means to find the right club. These are her insights:

1. Research Your Local Running Club Options

“Before committing to a running club, it’s essential to do your homework,” advises Jordaan. “Start by researching running clubs close to where you’ll be doing most of your training, whether that’s near your workplace or home.” Location matters, as convenient access to your club will make it easier to stay committed to your running routine. Obviously, you also want to join a club (or ‘group’) with similar interests when it comes to types of running (trail or road) etc.

2. Find the Right Running Club or Group For You

Jordaan suggests, “If you prefer training with a group, inquire if the club offers different running groups that match your ability level.” Running with a group that shares your pace and goals can provide the ideal support system for your progress. You also have to ‘vibe’ with the community. You’ll know when you’ve found your tribe.

3. Long Run Support

For those who value long runs, Jordaan recommends checking if the club offers regular supported long runs. Having access to well-organised long runs can be invaluable, especially if you’re training for a marathon or an ultra-distance event.

4. Time Trials for Progress Tracking

“Most clubs host weekly time trials,” says Jordaan. “If that’s something you’re interested in, ensure the day of the week aligns with your training program and schedule.” Time trials can help you track your progress and provide a competitive edge to your training.

5. Affiliation with Athletics South Africa

“If your running goals include participating in a marathon or ultra event that requires club membership, make sure the club you choose is registered with Athletics South Africa (ASA),” advises Jordaan. “When you join such a club, you’ll need to obtain a permanent ASA license to meet event requirements.”

6. Club Kit and Identity

“Check out the club’s attire and make sure you like the style and colours,” suggests Jordaan. This might sound trivial, but feeling comfortable and proud of your club’s identity can boost your motivation and sense of belonging. Style, well, that is important too.

7. Social Interaction and Community

“For those seeking a vibrant running community with social interactions,” Jordaan adds, “find out if the club regularly gathers at a specific spot or has a clubhouse. Also, inquire if the club supports local races and has a gazebo at the finish venue.” Socialising with clubmates and having a support network during races can enhance your overall running experience.

8. Test the Waters

Jordaan advises potential club members to visit a club multiple times before making a commitment. “Getting a feel for the club culture and camaraderie is essential,” she says. “You want to ensure that you’re comfortable with the group and that it aligns with your running goals.”

Joining a running club can be a fantastic way to elevate your running game while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow runners.
